An Entertainment Backup Plan

An Entertainment Backup Plan

After today’s events, I am considering creating an entertainment backup plan. Lest you think Murphy hits our home each time we entertain, let me assure you that we entertain quite a bit without incidents.

Tonight was not the case. Everything was going well. I had picked up the pizzas from Papa Murphy’s this afternoon, the house was cleaned, and homework finished.

With the oven preheated, I placed the pizza on the top rack, set the timer, and sat down to rest.

Ahh!

The Incident

Paul came home and was hanging up his jacket when we saw a flash in our kitchen. Checking the light bulbs for outages, we found none. Not seeing anything else, we wrote it off to a power surge.

About 20 minutes later the timer sounded, and I went to the oven. Well, everything was dark.

At this time, I realized that the flash was from the oven. Paul reset the breakers, and then we checked the unit. The oven light and the stovetop worked fine. However, the oven had shorted out. Bummer!

Thankfully, I have wonderful neighbors. I called up one and explained the situation. In typical southern hospitality, she invited me down to use her oven. I enjoyed the time listening and playing with her children while the pizza finished baking.

Considering a Backup Plan

Our dinner turned out well, got off to a little late start, and we had a great night. We are not sure how we will fix the oven. But for now, the rest of our week sports a cooktop menu, so we are good to go.

Though this experience turned out fine, I began thinking about what I would have done had my neighbor not been home. I had called my nextdoor neighbor first, and she was not home. But the second neighbor I called was able to help me out.

Not that I plan to keep numerous options available when we entertain, but I have started thinking about our entertainment backup plan, which definitely includes my fantastic neighbors.

I’m thinking that I might want to choose a cooktop, oven, and freezer/microwave option. Of course, if the power goes out, then I’ll need a grill option. Happy creating!

Question: Do you have an entertainment backup plan? If so, would you be willing to share it?

Weekly Menu Plan: February 17-22, 2014

In getting back into our routine from some restful and relaxing days last week, I should have created our weekly menu plan over the weekend.

However, I didn’t, and there’s no going back.

The nice thing about planning our menu week by week is I can start the week on whatever day I can menu plan. For the days I missed, I just fill-in what we ate.

Is this method cheating? No way! I’m starting where I am, giving myself grace, and focusing on the next 6-7 days.

Rather than throwing in the towel for the entire week because I didn’t start when I wanted, I just grabbed a pencil on Monday morning and took a trip to our refrigerator, freezer, and pantry.

Using the ingredients I had on-hand, I wrote out our weekly menu plan to kickoff a busy week.

Breakfasts

  • Cereal
  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Grits
  • Cheesy toast
  • Fruit

Lunches

  • Turkey
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Sandwiches (PBJ, grilled cheese, turkey, ham, etc.)
  • Leftovers

Dinners

  • Monday: Cheese tortellini with Alfredo sauce and vegetables
  • Tuesday: Open-faced pork chop sandwiches and vegetables
  • Wednesday: Entertaining with Papa Murphy’s pizzas, salad, and dessert
  • Thursday: Pan-seared chicken with gravy, rice, and vegetables
  • Friday: Roped sausage, macaroni and cheese, and vegetables
  • Saturday: Steak-um sandwiches with onions and mushrooms, chips, and fresh vegetables

Keeping flexibile within our plan, we may rearrange the order should we feel a need. With a tentative plan, we can make changes knowing we have all the ingredients at home.

These meals are scheduled to land on our plates this week. If you post your weekly menu plan, then please leave a link in the comments for our inspiration. Happy planning!

Finding Your Momentum

Finding Your Momentum
Finding Your Momentum

Welcome, Blogelina Commentathon participants! Glad you are joining us on this journey of Using Time Wisely. Jump right on in as we learn from each other.

Last week was a big hiccup from our family’s typical week. With light snow falling early Tuesday morning through the development of black ice on Friday morning, our family stayed home.

Of course, we ventured out to play in the snow once it accumulated, but we also enjoyed sleeping later and staying up past normal bedtime.

Don’t get me wrong, we loved it! However, all good things must come to an end.

As we moved bedtime back over the weekend, we are starting to find our momentum. If you are out of sync due to illness, snow, or other unusual circumstances, you might feel sluggish and unmotivated.

Recognize that a change is needed and that you can make that change. In finding your momentum, start with your routines, plan simple meals, and get your rest.

Start with your Routines

Routines are patterns of activities performed in a sequential order. For example, in our family’s evening routine, my children prepare for bed. These activities include:

    • Fill drink containers and take upstairs
    • Bath/shower
    • Put on pajamas
    • Brush teeth
    • Go potty
    • Lay out clothes for tomorrow

This routine is automatic for our 3 children. When Paul and I ask them to go upstairs, they fall into this routine and prepare for bed.

By starting with the routine, our family gets back into a rhythm. For resetting, I find the evening routine the most important because it sets us up for a great morning. At which time, we can implement our morning routine and then fall into our afternoon routine.

Once the routines start flowing, we find our momentum and get back on track.

Plan Simple Meals

During this time of transition, I find simple meals the best use of my time. I know I will need to help Mr. 8, Miss 6, and Miss 3 with extra homework, more reminders, and time to adjust as we find our groove.

By falling back on our list of 15 Quick Meals for Busy Nights, I create margin (extra time in our schedule) while feeding our family.

My other favorite dinner strategies include crock pot options and freezer cooking which I place on our monthly menu planner. (You are welcome to download my FREE printable menu planner).

This menu planning tool helps our family get to the table while using time wisely since we don’t have to wonder what’s for dinner at 5:00 p.m.  Whether you use a menu planner or another tool, experiment to discover what works best for you in finding your momentum.

Get your Rest

As you get back into your routines with your well-fed family, take time to get your rest. As you are working diligently and exerting more energy to get back into your normal pattern, you will need rest.

Think of it as the first day of school. Do you remember how exhausted you or your kids are after that first day. Whew! It’s a whirlwind. My daughter did not even make it to her bed. She fell asleep out of exhaustion on the ride home.

You are tired. It is normal as you are gaining speed and finding your momentum. Realize that getting back to normal is going to cost you some sleep. Take it. The better rested you are, the more energy, more patience, and more stamina you will have to tackle the tasks at hand.

With a plan in place, are you ready to press forward? Begin with a mindset of “I can do it,” and then start with your routines, plan simple meals, and get your rest. Before you know it, you’ll be back into your groove and plugging along.

Hiccups will happen, so creating a plan for those bumps in the road will help you in finding your momentum while using time wisely. Happy momentum building!

Question: How do you find momentum when life happens?

2014: Presidents’ Day Activities, Crafts, Recipes, and Worksheets

This coming Monday, February 17, 2014, is the United States’ federal holiday honoring our Presidents.

Though most activities are centered on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Presidents’ Day encompasses all our American Presidents.

When Paul and I lived in Pennsylvania, we took a train ride into Philadelphia one Saturday morning. Besides visiting Independence Hall and the huge Liberty Bell, we toured the Philadelphia Mint.

Wow! I still remember this experience from over 10 years ago.

My U.S. Mint Visit

At that time, the museum portion was intriguing as we learned of the choosing process for each type of American currency printed at that Mint.

Highlighting the events of the Presidents, who were chosen for that currency, I remember how awed I was by the precise and intentional decisions of each stroke.

After viewing the museum portion, we watched from a large window, the workers printing currency. Dressed in their uniforms, including gloves, the process was precise, just like choosing the design.

Though I have not returned to a U.S. Mint since that visit, I still remember that experience and think of it around Presidents’ Day each year. Not sure if Mints still offer visits. If they do, I highly recommend taking a tour.

Without a U.S. Mint in our area, we are not planning any outings – although Sonic has a good hot dog deal. However, we can celebrate Monday with these Presidents’ Day activities, crafts, recipes, and worksheets:

Presidents’ Day Activities, Crafts, Recipes, and Worksheets

  • Enchanted Learning includes a popsicle stick log cabin craft along with Presidents’ Day printable pages, like the math decoder
  • Family Education links to 30+ Presidents’ Day activities

  • Seeded at the Table shows how to make these red, white, and blue skewers
  • Home and School Mosaics included a Presidents’ Day mini unit complete with videos
  • BeCentsAble compiled a list of Presidents’ Day coupons

If these activities leave you wanting more, then access more patriotic activities from this 2013 post, celebrating Independence Day.

Wishing all Americans a wonderful Presidents’ Day, as we celebrate those who fought, founded, and led the United States of America.

Happy Presidents’ Day!
