Vacation Savings: Gardens Membership – Part 4 of 5

In going down to Florida for our family vacations, we repeat some of the same activities and then branch out to try new places.

In this 5-part series, I am sharing how our family stretched our dollars during our two-week vacation spending less than $1,000.

In Part 1, I gave our cost breakdown; in Part 2, I explained our zoo membership; and in Part 3, I shared the benefits of our science membership. In Part 4, I present a new-to-us gardens membership.

Part 4: Botanical Gardens Membership – $25

Researching the Information

While checking my junk e-mail account to peruse the daily deals to which I subscribe, I found an interesting Groupon – an annual membership to a botanical garden in Florida for $25. In researching the address, I found these gardens next to the Children’s museum we visit.

In addition to the close proximity to the museum, this garden has reciprocal benefits. The American Horticultural Society reciprocal list offers free admission to numerous other gardens with this one membership.

Evaluating the Information

Having never visited a botanical garden and not knowing how our young children would react to the flora, we weighed the cost vs. the benefits. Though the adventure might lack activity, our children would enjoy seeing the plants, flowers, and waterfalls while walking the paths.

Choosing an Option

Taking a chance that one or more of our family members would enjoy the visit, I checked the expiration date on the Groupon to verify we could activate our membership within the time frame. Upon confirmation, I purchased the voucher for the botanical gardens annual membership for $25.

Using our Membership

In planning our vacation day, we chose to visit the gardens before heading to the Children’s museum. When we arrived at the location, the admission counters for both the gardens and the museum were in the same place.

The admission process for the gardens took longer as the cashier verified the Groupon voucher and then activated our annual membership. I had also purchased two additional admissions from Groupon for $10 to admit my parents.

When getting our membership cards, we learned that for the month of August, membership at this garden granted us access into a unique aquarium nearby. We did take a trip over to that location on another day and enjoyed the free admission from our garden membership.

Vacation savings - gardens membership

Though the day was very hot and we hurried through the last portion, the adults enjoyed the scenery more than the kids. Thankfully, we saw the garden first as we ended up staying at the museum until it closed for the day. 🙂

In researching, evaluating, choosing, and using our botanical garden membership, this purchase was worth the money. Just giving our children a different perspective was worth the investment. Had we needed to save that money, then this membership would not have been purchased.

By subscribing to daily deal sites, I snagged this garden membership deal with all the reciprocal benefits and paid half price. In stretching our dollars, we saved on the full price and gained at least two new adventures while using time wisely.

If you know your next destination, then subscribe to daily deal sites, check your e-mail, and verify expiration dates before purchasing. In using time wisely, you can plan a fun vacation while stretching your dollars. Happy savings!

Start Saving from Scratch – Part 1 of 6

Without constant attention, my kitchen, meal planning, coupons, and grocery shopping trips began spiraling downward. Yikes!

Now that life is getting back to my normal, which is still very busy but manageable, I am pressing the reset button.

If you have wanted to start saving on your grocery bill – using coupons or not, then tag along with me in this 6-part series on Start Saving from Scratch.

Part 1: Organizing the Food Supply

The best way to save money, energy, and time when feeding my family is to make meals with the food we have in the house. However, with numerous individuals helping in the kitchen recently, I’m not really sure what items I have. To start saving from scratch, I take an inventory while organizing my food supply areas.

Pantry

The time it will take to organize your pantry depends on the size of your stockpile. If you purchase multiple items at discounted prices, then you probably have lots of items in your pantry.

When I organize my pantry, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour. I have designated specific shelves for different items. This arrangement saves time and energy when retrieving a desired product.

While I organize my pantry, I jot down items that need replenishing on my grocery list and make notes of any meal ideas on my menu plan.

Freezer

My side-by-side refrigerator/freezer houses frequently used items. Organizing my inside freezer takes less than 15 minutes. This short time frame is nice because my outside freezer needs another deep clean complete with defrosting.

Organizing my well-stocked freezer takes somewhere between 1 and 2 hours. However, knowing what freezer cooking options I have available saves our family money, energy, and time.

Refrigerator

The easiest of the three spaces for me is organizing the refrigerator. Routinely having a leftover night keeps our refrigerator cleaned out. Spending less than 15 minutes, I can take a quick inventory while organizing my refrigerator.

To start saving from scratch organize your food supply. With the food supply areas organized and an inventory of what is on-hand, you are ready for part 2 – coming next week. To be continued . . . Happy organizing!

Question: Which food supply area takes you longer to organize: pantry, freezer, or refrigerator?

Wishing you and all your princesses and pirates a fun and safe Halloween!

In keeping to our traditions, our family will reverse trick-or-treat before heading out for our own candy.

My little princesses and soccer player will venture out to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and our Publix (between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) for Halloween celebrations before heading out into our neighborhood this evening.

However you spend your Halloween, enjoy using time wisely with your family and friends.

Happy Halloween!

Daylight Savings Time: Sunday, November 4, 2012

What a blessed thought . . . an extra hour heading our way Saturday night! With our fall festival all day Saturday, I am looking forward to relaxing and sleeping soundly an extra hour on Saturday night.

As daylight savings time comes to a close, how you will spend your extra hour? In using time wisely, I plan to soak a bit longer in a hot bathtub and then go to bed. That is, if I don’t fall asleep in the bathtub. 😉

I plan to reset my clock before going to bed as I will not be up at 2:00 a.m. to do so. For those who know me well, you know that 2:00 a.m. is prime working time. However, in using my time wisely, I will go to bed.

For those who live in a daylight savings time area, adjust your clocks for the change on Sunday, November 3, 2012. Happily adjusting my clock; enjoy your extra hour!

Question: What do you have planned for Saturday’s time change?
