2012: Remembering September 11, 2001

September 11, 2012 by Tracy

Eleven years ago, the world changed. The attack of one group put the entire world on edge and glued to the media coverage. I remember watching the coverage for days. Do you remember where you were?

Tuesday Morning

As a legal assistant with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pennsylvania, I remember how routine my morning had been. Around 9:00 a.m., I was working alone in my office. Needing a few documents for a case, I called the assigned agent.

At the conclusion of our call, he said, “You be very careful.” The comment took me by surprise since my office was in a federal courthouse. I had a panic button and numerous U.S. Marshals, who could come to my aid within a minute. Why did I need to be careful?

After repeating the comment back to him, he realized that I had no idea what was going on. The agent said, “Tracy, you need to turn on the television.” Thanking him for the information, I hung up.

Without a television in our office space, I walked down the hall to the Senator’s office, who always had C-Span going. As I entered their office, I met the shocking video of a plane crashing into the South Tower. I sank into a chair awed and mesmerized by the vivid pictures of the attacks.

Between phone calls, the Senator’s aid came out to see if anything had changed. When the report of the Pentagon attack aired, our presiding Judge evacuated the building. I remember going back to my office, calling my husband, and leaving.

The Rest of Tuesday

Usually going home at 9:45 a.m. on a workday would mean a play day, but not that day. I don’t remember the ride home on the bus, but I remember walking into the apartment building. The office manager came running out to meet me. Knowing where I worked, she embraced me asking what I knew which ended up being less than what she knew.

As I maneuvered past her, I went to our apartment. I turned on the television to hear that a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania and the North Tower of the World Trade Center had collapsed. After changing my clothes, I curled up on the couch with my blanket. Camped out for the day, I prayed, cried, and watched the reports, the smoke, and the devastation.

For me, I will never forget Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The events of that day are still freshly imprinted in my memory. Though I sat most of the day, many first responders were sacrificing their health to assist, find, and reunite others.

Thank you to all first responders, military personnel, air-traffic controllers, and our government leaders!

On this day of remembrance, I reflect on America. With an election year on the horizon, Americans will not see eye to eye, and my one vote really doesn’t make a difference. But I serve a holy God, who has already written the events of history. I can depend on Him which is all I need for comfort, safety, and security. Praise His Name!

Question: Do you remember your morning events on Tuesday, September 11, 2001?

Cleaning: Ridding Mildew from the Dishwasher

September 10, 2012 by Tracy

Ridding mildew from the dishwasher

Ridding mildew from the dishwasherUpon returning home from our vacation, I found mildew growing in our dishwasher. Disgusting!

My house was nice and clean with I left, so I was surprised that my dishwasher did not enjoy its vacation from us. 🙂

Since we do not use paper plates in our home, I serve each meal on our everyday ceramic dishes. With dishes from three meals a day and snacks, our dishwasher gets a workout.

The warmth inside and the bout of inactivity brought on a growing case of mildew.

Though the black residue was only on the sides and the vent of the door, I quickly started ridding mildew from the dishwasher.

Ridding Mildew from the Dishwasher

  • Tracy’s Tools of the Trade

1. Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner

2. Toothbrush

3. Old towel

  • Tracy’s Cleaning Technique

1. Spray the mildew with the Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner

2. Wait about 5 minutes

3. Use the old toothbrush to remove stubborn mildew from the sides and vents

4. Dry off with the towel

One of the sides needed extra scrubbing to release the mildew. To get a thorough cleaning, I scrubbed inside the rubber seals around the dishwasher door which trapped mildew in the creases.

Preventing Mildew from the Dishwasher

In running our dishwasher almost every day, I did not realize that frequent use keeps mildew away. Simple wipe downs and scraping food from the dishes prior to loading the dishwasher keep the appliance parts clean and clear to operate efficiently.

For more tips, visit this How to Clean and Maintain a Dishwasher post which explains how to take the dishwasher apart for a thorough cleaning.

As you load and unload your dishwasher, check and rid mildew before it builds up. Keeping your appliance clean and clear of debris prevents overworking your dishwasher. Yes, it takes time, but in using time wisely, your efforts can lengthen the longevity of your household appliances which saves you money, energy, and time. Happy cleaning!

Question: How often do you run your dishwasher?

Social Security: Correcting Your Annual Statement

September 9, 2012 by Tracy

Insurance File - Box 2 of Important DocumentsWith your Social Security Annual Statement obtained and reviewed, you may find some inaccuracies.

Though I only had about 10 years of work experience when I first reviewed my statement, I found incorrect information.

Armed with documentation to prove the validity of my challenge, I took these steps to correct my Social Security Annual Statement.

Correcting my Social Security Annual Statement

Upon reviewing my Social Security annual statement, I found two amounts on Page 3 that failed to record my full Taxed Social Security Earnings from Box 1 on my W-2 statements. Armed with my Social Security card, my annual statement, and W-2 Wage and Tax Statements, I went to my local Social Security office.

When I arrived, I waited in a short line before seeing a representative at the counter. Upon showing the clerk the discrepancies, she took my forms to a back office. She then came back with my documents and said I would see the changes on my next annual statement.

Though I really wanted verification, which she could not provide, I left the office. The next year, I received a corrected Social Security Annual Statement.

During my interaction, the Social Security office did not accept phone calls, so I had to visit the office. Also, the information was not computerized, so copies were taken of my documentation and sent to headquarters for processing. Hopefully, the process for you will prove easier.

Correcting your Social Security Annual Statement

When you find a discrepancy on your annual statement, the Social Security Administration invites you to contact them via telephone or mail:

Call us right away at 1-800-772-1213 (7 a.m.–7 p.m. your local time) if any earnings for years before last year are shown incorrectly. Please have your W-2 or tax return for those years available.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.

If you have questions about your personal information, you must provide your complete Social Security number.

If you are in the United States, you also may write to the Social Security Administration, Office of Earnings Operations, P.O. Box 33026, Baltimore, MD 21290-3026.

If you are outside the United States, please write to the Office of International Operations, P.O. Box 17769, Baltimore, MD 21235-7769, USA.

In using time wisely to correct your Social Security Annual Statement press on. Gather your documents, make the call, and proceed until your annual statement is accurate. Keep plugging along. Once completed, review your statement annually.

Hang in there! Your future benefits depend on you using time wisely now. Working along with you!

Question: Do you keep all your W-2 forms from your first job to the present?

Working the savings strategies at the drugstores help my family in stretching our dollars. In addition to their monthly store coupon booklet, in-ad store coupons, rebate program, and Register Rewards, Walgreens is rolling out a new program called Balance Rewards.

What are Balance Rewards?

In a nutshell, it is a loyalty program. You register for free, receive a card, scan the card at checkout, and earn points for qualified purchases.

What are the Rewards?

Per the terms and conditions of the Balance Rewards registration, you can redeem points for the following rewards:

Earned Points are converted into Redemption Dollars in five (5) tiers:

(1) 5,000 points = $5

(2) 10,000 points = $10

(3) 18,000 points = $20

(4) 30,000 points = $35

(5) 40,000 points = $50

At the time of transaction, you can choose to keep earning points or redeem the points on your card. This system reminds me of the Shop your Way Rewards with Sears, Kmart, MyGofer, and Land’s End.

How Do I Earn Rewards?

Will My Rewards Expire?

Yes, your points have expiration dates! You will need to make a purchase at least once every 6 months to keep your account active.
