Free Federal Tax Preparation: 5 Steps to Filing your Tax Return

April 7, 2012 by Tracy

The following information is not professional tax advice. I am sharing how our family files our taxes without paying a professional hundreds of dollars for tax preparation. Our taxes are not complicated, and we choose to use an on-line service while using time wisely.

Filing our taxes last weekend took longer than I anticipated. Most years the filing takes between 1-2 hours total. This year was different since I needed to research the filing of Using Time Wisely along with our personal taxes.

After about 4-6 hours, I authorized the electronic filing and celebrated with a warm bath and Facebook time. 🙂

If you choose to file your own taxes but want the help of a tax service, then here’s my 5-step plan to go from pile of paperwork to filed taxes.

STEP ONE: Gather your Documents

Throughout the year, I toss all tax documents inside a labeled file folder. At tax time, I get the folder and begin. If you do not have a file or are not sure what documents you need, then use my list of documents I gather to start:

Income

    1. W-2 forms (from employers)
    2. IRS notices (1098, 1099R, etc.)
    3. Refund from 2010 state taxes
    4. Retirement documentation (income from conversions of a qualifying retirement account)
    5. Business accounting documentation

Deductions

    1. Mortgage interest forms
    2. Line of Credit interest forms
    3. Property tax receipts (vehicles, home, etc.)
    4. Charitable donations

 Other

    1. Use tax receipts (items purchased via Internet without paying sales tax)
    2. Copy of 2010 federal tax return

These are the documents I gather. You may need more documentation (i.e., medical receipts, childcare expenses, tax preparation fees, etc.) to file your 2011 taxes.

STEP TWO: Choose a Tax Service

In an effort to save my family money, I choose to prepare our taxes. Up until last year, I filed our taxes by hand. Last year, I tried TaxAct and loved it! The federal filing for us was free, and I paid $14.95 for our state filing.

Paying less than $20 for the same tax preparations that a professional would charge $250 was beneficial to our family while stretching our dollars.

This year, TaxAct sent me a promotion for the deluxe package which included the federal and state tax filing for $13.95 which I purchased. Having used the on-line service last year, I was familiar with the steps, and some of our information transferred to our 2011 return. Yeah! This service continues to save me money, energy, and time!

If you are looking for an on-line service, you may qualify for free federal tax preparation through these available companies. Though the federal filing is free, these companies charge a fee for the state filing.

STEP THREE: Search for Promotional Codes

Once you decide which company you prefer, search for a promotional code through your favorite search engine (e.g., Swagbucks, Google, etc.). To search, type the “[name of the business] promotional code” (e.g., “TaxAct promotional code”) into the search box.

If you find none, try the company’s web site, scan the banners and advertisements on the home page, and check the pricing page.  You might be surprised at the savings found with a quick search.

STEP FOUR: Register at your Chosen Company

If you are filing with a new-to-you company, you will need to set up your account. This process takes a few minutes.

Note: Remember to record your user name and password to get access to your account after periods of inactivity and next year.

TaxAct timed out 3-4 times during my preparation while I researched, added our receipts, and checked forms.

STEP FIVE: Add Amounts, Review, and File

Add Amounts

Once you register, you are ready to begin. The service will ask you questions and offer blocks for you to add the amounts from your documentation. With your documents gathered, this process goes quickly.

Review

When all information gets entered, review and run the alerts. The service will alert you to any inconsistencies, missing information, or problems.

File

Once you have reviewed your federal return and verified the information, you can choose to e-file or mail your return. You will want to save a copy of your return. I choose to save it to my computer and print a hardcopy for our records.

Once filed, you should receive a confirmation notice. I print this notice for our records.

State Tax Filing

For our state return, TaxAct transferred our federal return information to our state forms. Within 15 minutes, I added two other amounts, reviewed, and filed our state taxes. (Insert happy dance!)

Though there are tons of other things you would rather do than file taxes, you can gather your documents, choose a tax service, search for promotional codes, register your account, and add amounts, review, and file your taxes while using time wisely.

You still have a little over a week, but why wait. Knock out those taxes, cross another item off your to-do list, and save your family $200 or more by filing your taxes through a reputable tax service. You can do it! Just start at step one.  Happy savings!

Question: How do you file your taxes?

Home Depot: Window Bird Feeder

April 6, 2012 by Tracy

Not sure how I feel about inviting birds to our yard. Sometime today, one or more birds have swiped the strawberries out of our garden.

At this moment, my 4-year-old daughter is NOT happy with them. If she decides to be kind and we attend this event, then we will place our bird feeders in the front yard away from our backyard garden.

If you want to welcome birds into your space, then the Home Depot Kids’ Workshop project may offer enjoyment.

2012: Garden Journal – April Edition

April 5, 2012 by Tracy

The garden post has arrived! I gave you a sneak peek into our garden when sharing our spring break activities. Though I posted a few pictures of my children planting, I will share specifics and plan to post updates throughout the planting season. In this first edition, I will start from the ground up. 🙂

Planning our Garden

Having only had a container garden at our apartment, I needed details for preparing the soil, the box, and the plants or seeds. Knowing I wanted a square-foot-garden, I turned to my favorite search engine, Swagbucks.com.

In my research, I found this plant a compact vegetable garden article from boyslife.org. This post included all the supplies and the directions.

Gathering Garden Supplies

For our Friday date night in March, Paul and I went to dinner and then headed to Lowe’s Home Improvement store. We had the wood cut and purchased the supplies. For the garden soil, we chose 4 bags of mushroom compost and 4 bags of top soil.

We then chose some of our plants, and checked out redeeming $15 in Ace Hardware coupons (a competitor accepted by Lowe’s). We spent under $100 and had most of our garden supplies.

Building our Garden

On Saturday, Paul built the box. We then laid 4-5 sheets thick of newspaper inside the box covering the entire bottom and partway up the sides. The newspaper prevents weeds from rising into the box and will breakdown into the soil, eventually.

Paul then poured the 4 bags of mushroom compost on the newspaper in the frame. The children and I smoothed out the compost. Then Paul added the 4 bags of top soil on the mushroom compost. With our soil complete, we began planting.

Planting our Garden

Once the box was complete, Paul and I helped our children plant the herbs and vegetables. Most of them were plants, so we dug a hole, removed the container, placed the plant in the hole, and packed the soil around the plant. Our spinach and carrots were the only two varieties planted with seeds.

March 17, 2012

Completing our Garden

Early the next week, we made a family trip to another Lowe’s and purchased our remaining plants. After planting them, our herb and vegetable garden was complete. We now enjoy tending the plants, misting the leaves, and watching them grow.

March 21, 2012

Harvesting our Fruit

Within 9 days of planting, we harvested 3 strawberries. Three days later, we picked another 5 strawberries.

March 27, 2012          and          March 30, 2012

After surviving two hail storms, three of our strawberries fed the birds. When we went to pick these strawberries, we found them gone or half eaten.

April 4, 2012

My oldest daughter was very sad. But there are three more strawberries almost ready, and I hope the birds forget about them. 😉

In 18 days, our garden produced 11 strawberries and lots of growth. I look forward to sharing our garden journey with you throughout the planting season.

March 30, 2012       and         April 4, 2012

If you planted a garden, please share your tips and tricks. As a newbie gardener, I ask lots of questions, research, and listen. In using time wisely, I love to learn from those who know because it saves me money, energy, and time. Happy savings!

The Money Saving Mom’s Budget: Audio Release and Giveaway

April 4, 2012 by Tracy

Photograph Credit: Litfuse Publicity Group

As you know, I have set goals for this year based on Crystal Paine’s book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget. After publishing my book review, I received a request to listen to Crystal’s audio book to which I accepted.

My Review

At first I was leery about listening because I am not an auditory learner. To grasp the concepts, I need to read the book, not just hear it. With that said, I enjoyed the conversational tone of the audio book.

At times I got lost because my thoughts wandered. But during the examples and illustrations, she drew me back via her storytelling. Other times, I felt like Crystal was sitting next to me on the couch sharing how she saves money.  Though I gain more from seeing the words on a page, I really enjoyed hearing the steps directly from Crystal.

Audio books are not for everyone. In using time wisely, you might enjoy listening on your way to and from work, while cleaning your house, or just relaxing for an evening. If you want a budget resource with steps to financial success, then come learn more about Crystal’s audio book release.

Audio Book Release and Giveaway

On Thursday, April 5, 2012, Crystal is hosting a live chat where she will share tips and advice on keeping a budget. During Crystal’s Live Webcast Event, she will be giving away gift certificates, books, and more. Gearing up for this event, Crystal is hosting a giveaway where one grand prize winner will receive:

  • A brand new iPad2
  • The Money Saving Mom’s Budget Audio Book by Crystal Paine

Crystal will announce the winner during the Live Webcast Event which begins at 5:00 p.m. PST (8:00 p.m. EST) on Thursday, April 5, 2012. To RSVP to the Live Webcast Event, click here and enter the giveaway which ends today, April 4, 2012. Remember, you definitely will not win if you don’t enter. 😉

Disclosure Policy: I received The Money Saving Mom’s Budget Audio book for free in exchange for writing my honest review. Thank you to Litfuse Publicity Group and Crystal Paine!

2012: Celebrating Unhurried Easter Traditions

April 3, 2012 by Tracy

Resurrection Eggs

For our family, the Easter holiday is much more than a bunny, plastic eggs, and new clothes. Teaching my children the Easter story from Christ’s birth through His resurrection is foremost in our celebrations. Yes, I say celebrations because rejoicing in our risen Savior is an everyday event.

Previous Routine

Typically, our Sunday morning routine becomes rushed and hurried. Many times we miss Easter Sunday’s early service due to the Easter baskets, taking the tags off the new clothes, and prying my children from their new toys. By the time I get to the service, my mind is not focused on rejoicing.

This Year’s Plan

This year, I proposed to Paul that we celebrate the Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets, and Easter pictures on Saturday. Without having to present the baskets of goodies and then asking them to put them away for later, our children can leisurely sort through their baskets and play.

Hubby loved the idea, so we plan to enjoy some family time on Saturday, get a great night’s rest, and then joyfully arrive to celebrate our risen Savior with our church family on Sunday morning.

Our plans are tentative and may change, but I look forward to focusing on Jesus Christ’s victory over death on this Easter Sunday. As you make your plans, consider ways to make this holiday special. Need some inspiration? Try these ideas:

Resurrection Eggs

By far, my favorite Easter tradition is using Resurrection Eggs to share the Easter story. Each of my children has their own set which they use to tell the Easter story. Though I could buy Resurrection Eggs, I choose to make my own. 🙂

Coloring Eggs

Since our family does not eat hard-boiled eggs, we color our eggs without boiling them first. Yes, we are very careful with them, but then I can use the eggs as I need them. If you hard boil your eggs and want a unique way to coloring, Favecrafts.com offers this free Easter Egg e-book.

Egg Hunts

Though we don’t fill our eggs with prizes or candy, our children love the egg hunts. The favorite hunts are after dark with flashlights. (Note to self: Remember to count the eggs before you hide them. If not, you will be searching for them in the morning. ;-))

Easter Baskets

Our family reuses our Easter baskets each year, and we bypass the crafts. But if you crave the crafts, then you might like All Free Holiday Crafts’ free Easter crafts e-book.

Recipes

You might be surprised to know that I have never hosted Easter dinner. Gasp! I usually supply a side item but not a  full spread. If you are preparing a feast or need a new item to serve, then the free e-book by Mr. Food may come to your rescue.

If you just want a fun dessert, I love the Resurrection Rolls made with crescent rolls, marshmallows, and more posted at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam.

In planning your Easter celebration, remember why you celebrate this holiday. Enjoy your activities without the hustle and bustle. With a little more planning this year, I hope this Easter will be a Sunday full of rejoicing in our risen Savior. Happy planning!

Question: What is your favorite Easter tradition?
