A.C. Moore: Teacher Appreciation Week

The teacher discount program at A.C. Moore has changed into a much better system over the years.

Instead of applying for their program, a teacher can simply show her valid school ID, a pay stub, home school certificate, or educator certificate or license to receive the discount.

Usually, the teacher discount is 15%.

However, during Teacher Appreciation Week, Sunday, April 4 – Saturday, April 10, 2014, teachers receive a 20% discount off sale and regular priced merchandise.

If your student has a project coming in the last few weeks of school or your teacher needs to replenish supplies before next year, then present this offer to your teacher along with an A.C. Moore gift card.

Most teachers love to shop for classroom supplies. Happy appreciating!

2014: Teacher Appreciation Week

Though the official Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 6, 2014, many schools celebrate a Teacher Appreciation Week.

Having celebrated an early Teacher Appreciation Week earlier this year, we had a jump start.

Our school chose to honor our teachers during a week in March.

The school committee provided beverages, snacks, and goodies throughout the week to all faculty, staff, and administrators.

On Wednesday of that week, the teachers were treated to a luncheon while their classes were watched by room moms and parent volunteers.

During our Teacher Appreciation Week, we showered my son’s teacher with these tangible acts of gratitude:

2014: Teacher Appreciation WeekMonday: Homemade card written by Mr. 8

Tuesday: Fresh loaf of homemade sourdough bread

Wednesday: Package of our favorite homemade chocolate chip cookies

Thursday:  Potted plant with 3 tulips beginning to bud

Friday: Container of our homemade chocolate-covered peanut butter crackers

In addition to these gifts, I wrote her a thank you note, watched her class during lunch and recess at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and I directed the third grade history fair program.

If you have the gift of time, then many teachers would love the extra help. From making copies to organizing a field trip, teachers have much to do and help is usually appreciated.

Other options for teacher gifts include preparing a meal, purchasing a gift card, organizing a group gift, providing an after-school snack, ordering a special book for her or her classroom, bringing supplies for a classroom project, or presenting a personal gift that your child’s teacher collects.

If you are blessed with a wonderful teacher, then please embrace and encourage her. Teachers have a difficult job motivating their students, partnering with parents, and working with their supervisors.

With the official Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday, May 6, celebrate the great teachers who are molding and shaping your student this school year. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Question: When is your Teacher Appreciation Week?

Time Management: Please Value Others’ Time

Time Management: Please Value Others’ Time

Time is valuable, and one of the quickest ways to ruin your rapport with others is to waste their time.

If you are overseeing a project and call a meeting, then please value others’ time by preparing, starting on time, and finishing on time.

Preparing for your Meeting

Map out a schedule and an outline for your meeting. A word-for-word speech is not necessarily needed, but an agenda is very helpful for your participants.

With a plan in place, do your best to stay on task. Other issues might arise and need attention, but move efficiently through them and get back to your agenda.

Starting on Time

By waiting for others to arrive or needing more time to setup and get organized, you are expecting those who were on time to use their time waiting.

If you oversee the meeting, then you should be ready at least 5 minutes prior to the starting time. Do emergencies occur? Yes. However, those instances should be rare, not the norm.

If you find that most of your meetings start late because participants arrive late, then this might be a sign of time wasted at prior meetings. The meeting participants have learned that your meeting time is really 5 or 10 minutes after the time indicated.

To change that cycle, you might need to start your meetings with a special announcement or incentive whereby those who are late miss that information or reward. Participants will quickly learn that they want to be at the start of your meeting, but you must follow through and start your meeting on time.

Finishing on Time

Just as important as starting on time, the meeting must finish on time. Your participants have blocked out time on their schedule for this meeting. They have other responsibilities and projects to do. If your meeting drags on past your meeting time, then you are using borrowed time.

In wrapping up your meeting, write out your conclusion. Too many speakers spend time preparing their introduction and body/content of their presentation and then wing their conclusion. Usually that means, they repeat themselves and finally just fizzle out with a dismissal.

You have spent time preparing, so take a few more minutes to write out the finishing words for your meeting. Once the business has concluded, finish with your written conclusion, and bring your meeting to an end.

Sitting through a couple of meetings in the last month, I have felt that my time was wasted. If you are a presenter, please value others’ time by preparing, starting on time, and finishing on time.

If you are organized and value others’ time, then you will earn respect. Others will enjoy coming to your meetings, and you will benefit with eager participants when you are using time wisely. Happy planning!

Question: How can a speaker/leader/coordinator better value others’ time?

This effort will raise the company’s total contributions to the American Red Cross to $80,000 over the last three years.“We hope everyone will come out on Free Cone Day and try one on us,” said Carvel President Scott Colwell. “I can’t think of a more appropriate way to kick-off our 80th anniversary celebration than giving our guests free, fresh ice cream and raising money for the American Red Cross®.”

Carvel serves only 100 percent delicious soft- serve and scooped ice cream treats and cakes that are hand-crafted daily at local Carvel shoppes. Guests this year can try the new salted caramel soft serve ice cream on Free Cone Day and for a limited time throughout summer, which features deliciously creamy caramel ice cream and a hint of salt.
