Blue’s Clues Birthday Party – Part 2 of 3

April 17, 2012 by Tracy

Blue's Clues birthday partyLast week I shared how Paul and I chose our toddler’s 2-year-old birthday party theme of Blue’s Clues. After making the theme choice, I had more decisions to make.

Since my two older children had a Blue’s Clues party for their first birthday, I had many items. However, I had no games. With my toddler joining in the games of her older siblings, we had to have a game of Blue’s Clues.

For those unfamiliar with this children’s program, Blue is a female dog that does not talk. To get her idea across, she marks three clues with her paw print to help us find the answer. Each segment follows the same basic sequence with the clues changing from episode to episode. The repetition is fantastic for learning sequence and order.

Keeping the guest list to our family, extended family, and one close friend’s family, I planned the following 2-hour morning birthday party for 8 adults and 6 children (ages 2 to 6):

Blue’s Clues Birthday Party Itinerary

Welcome. Greet each guest as she arrives, and escort to the living room to play or color Blue’s Clues coloring pages.

Games – Part 1 of 3. When all the guests arrive, the games will begin.

1. Find the First Clue: In determining what Blue wants to do today, we will need to play Blue’s Clues. With the first clue hidden, the participants will search for Blue’s Clue. Once found, we will add the clue to our handy-dandy notebook.

2. Hide and Seek Blue: Prior to the party, I will hide six different Blue’s Clues items (2 figurines, 2 stuffed animals, and 2 bath mitts). Each participant will seek one item.

Lunch. The table settings will include name cards for each child. The adults will help serve the children in the dining room and then relax and eat in the living room.

The menu:

  • Ham and cheese sandwiches
  • Chips and dip
  • Carrots, celery, and olives
  • Fruit salad: strawberries, cantaloupe, and bananas

Games – Part 2 of 3.

3. Pin the Paw on Blue: I will cut out 6 paw prints and write one participant’s name on each one. After blindfolding one child, he will turn around and placed the paw on the printout. The younger participants will either close their eyes or just stick the paw print on Blue.

Open Presents.

Games – Part 3 of 3.

4. Find the Second Clue: Another paw print is hidden. When the participants find it, we will draw that clue into our handy-dandy notebook.

5. Find the Third Clue: The participants will find the last paw print. We will add the last clue to our handy-dandy notebook and decipher Blue’s Clues.

Sing, Blow Candle, and Cake.

Thank you and Goody Bags.

Play with new toys and goody bag items.

With the itinerary set and most of the decorations unpacked, I waited for help to arrive before decorating the space and preparing the food.

With a plan in place, I scheduled time for play, games, food, other games, presents, more games, dessert, thankfulness, and goody bags. Next week in Part 3, I will finish this Blue’s Clues birthday party series with our execution of the planned itinerary.

Question: How detailed do you plan for a child’s birthday party?

Blue’s Clues Birthday Party – Part 1 of 3

April 10, 2012 by Tracy

Nailing down a theme for an event early helps to guide the rest of the planning. With a theme of character, color, or holiday, you can coordinate food, decorations, and favors. Sometimes getting to the theme is a journey.

Choosing a Theme

Prior to my daughter turning two, Paul and I wavered back and forth on the theme of her party. Having had a pink princess first birthday party, she missed the Blue’s Clues theme that our other two children had for their first birthday. Also, my toddler loves Blue and dressed as her for Halloween.

The other option was the custom party I created for my oldest daughter’s second birthday party centered on the book, Good Night, Gorilla. Both of our girls love this book as there are repetitive themes throughout the pages – colors, moon, balloon, animals, banana, etc.

Knowing that our toddler would probably outgrow both themes by next year, we paid attention to her playtime activities. During the weeks before her birthday, the reading of Good Night, Gorilla faded, but Blue remained in the coveted corner of her crib. Though I wanted to repeat the Good Night, Gorilla birthday party, this was not my party. My daughter loved and cared for Blue, so a Blue’s Clues birthday party we did.

Though the planning, shopping, and executing falls on my shoulders, I chose to consider my guest of honor’s wishes above my own. Though I already knew the answer, I still asked my toddler to choose her theme. By doing so and allowing her to help with the decorations, tableware, and games, I demonstrated my love and my willingness to create a fun party for her.

With the theme chosen and most of the decorations gathered from my older two children’s Blue’s Clues birthday parties, I had a game plan. Next week in Part 2, I will share our Blue’s Clues birthday party itinerary. To be continued . . .

Question: Did you choose themes for your child’s first or second birthday party?

2012: Celebrating Unhurried Easter Traditions

April 3, 2012 by Tracy

Resurrection Eggs

For our family, the Easter holiday is much more than a bunny, plastic eggs, and new clothes. Teaching my children the Easter story from Christ’s birth through His resurrection is foremost in our celebrations. Yes, I say celebrations because rejoicing in our risen Savior is an everyday event.

Previous Routine

Typically, our Sunday morning routine becomes rushed and hurried. Many times we miss Easter Sunday’s early service due to the Easter baskets, taking the tags off the new clothes, and prying my children from their new toys. By the time I get to the service, my mind is not focused on rejoicing.

This Year’s Plan

This year, I proposed to Paul that we celebrate the Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets, and Easter pictures on Saturday. Without having to present the baskets of goodies and then asking them to put them away for later, our children can leisurely sort through their baskets and play.

Hubby loved the idea, so we plan to enjoy some family time on Saturday, get a great night’s rest, and then joyfully arrive to celebrate our risen Savior with our church family on Sunday morning.

Our plans are tentative and may change, but I look forward to focusing on Jesus Christ’s victory over death on this Easter Sunday. As you make your plans, consider ways to make this holiday special. Need some inspiration? Try these ideas:

Resurrection Eggs

By far, my favorite Easter tradition is using Resurrection Eggs to share the Easter story. Each of my children has their own set which they use to tell the Easter story. Though I could buy Resurrection Eggs, I choose to make my own. 🙂

Coloring Eggs

Since our family does not eat hard-boiled eggs, we color our eggs without boiling them first. Yes, we are very careful with them, but then I can use the eggs as I need them. If you hard boil your eggs and want a unique way to coloring, Favecrafts.com offers this free Easter Egg e-book.

Egg Hunts

Though we don’t fill our eggs with prizes or candy, our children love the egg hunts. The favorite hunts are after dark with flashlights. (Note to self: Remember to count the eggs before you hide them. If not, you will be searching for them in the morning. ;-))

Easter Baskets

Our family reuses our Easter baskets each year, and we bypass the crafts. But if you crave the crafts, then you might like All Free Holiday Crafts’ free Easter crafts e-book.

Recipes

You might be surprised to know that I have never hosted Easter dinner. Gasp! I usually supply a side item but not a  full spread. If you are preparing a feast or need a new item to serve, then the free e-book by Mr. Food may come to your rescue.

If you just want a fun dessert, I love the Resurrection Rolls made with crescent rolls, marshmallows, and more posted at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam.

In planning your Easter celebration, remember why you celebrate this holiday. Enjoy your activities without the hustle and bustle. With a little more planning this year, I hope this Easter will be a Sunday full of rejoicing in our risen Savior. Happy planning!

Question: What is your favorite Easter tradition?

2012: Planning a March Madness Party

March 27, 2012 by Tracy

Photograph Credit: NCAA.com

With avid sports fans in our household (ahem . . . Paul and I), our kids get roped into watching, listening, and participating in all sorts of sports-related activities. Before you feel sorry for them, know that they love it!

One activity occurs during March Madness. The brackets get released on the Sunday night before the start of the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament that usually tips off on Wednesday. To participate in an on-line fantasy league, you must  select your best guesses before the first tip-off.

Paul helps our children fill out their brackets. Yes, even the 2-year-old gets in on the action. Paul and I then fill out our brackets and take part in at least one private fantasy league. At the moment, yours truly ranks #1 of out 5 in our fantasy league.

Depending on this weekend’s results, I may quickly fall. You see, I selected the Florida Gators to win the championship, and they lost their Sweet Sixteen game. Boo hoo! For those who want to know, they played a great game. However, their shots did not make the bucket during the last 4 minutes, so Louisville came from behind and won.

The game is now down to the Final Four: Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas, and Ohio State. If you are entertaining this weekend and need some basketball-themed ideas, consider these creative ways to enjoy the showdown:

1. Basketball Bash on a Budget

The television station KTVQ reported a few money-saving tips. To save money, energy, and time, ask your guests to bring a snack or dish to share. Consider a fun pot-luck event focused on building relationships and enjoying the game. This link also includes a recipe for a quick and easy 7-layer dip. Yum!

2. How to Throw a Final Four Party

My favorite tip from this ehow.com article is to play a radio in the bathroom. I had to laugh because everyone waits until a commercial or half time to race to the restroom. With continuous coverage available, the bathroom rush may lighten during the peak times. 😉

3. Basketball Party Activities

For all things basketball, the Party Shelf presents invitations, decorations, games, and recipe ideas. To start the party, I love the “Guess Who I Am” game centered on basketball terms.

4. March Madness Munchies

The Food Channel offers 6 snack recipes. The Easy Cheesy Meatball Slammers look delicious. These could also be a great lunch or birthday party option.

5. Final Four Party Ideas

If you are looking for a creative spin on your basketball party, then mLive suggests serving foods that represent each state. The information in the link is from a previous year, but the idea is very creative. Though not for a Final Four party, I might use this idea for a Super Bowl or a World’s Series party. Just thought the idea was fantastic.

Gathering these fun and creative ideas gets my entertaining gene excited. I love highlighting special events, even if the party only includes my family. Celebrating these little adventures keeps the fun going while using time wisely. Happy planning!

Question: For which team are your routing: Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas, or Ohio State?

Holiday Ideas: St. Patrick’s Day – 2012

March 13, 2012 by Tracy

Photograph Credit: Flickr (Dining Delight)

Though our family hosted both a small dinner party and a play date, we have not clad our home in green for Saturday’s holiday.

I know . . . I had great inspiration, but no big party plans for this celebration.  On the upside, I did swap the Valentine’s Day decorations for the St. Patrick’s Day embellishments and found some more St. Patrick’s Day recipes and crafts. 🙂

Last week, I shared 5 party ideas from around the blogosphere. This week, I will add 4 more ideas that I found creative.

More St. Patrick’s Day Ideas

Beverage: Lactose-free St. Patrick’s Day Shakes

Cookie: Rainbow Cookie

Cupcakes: Lucky Charms and Clover Cupcakes (Love the clover cupcakes!)

Activity: Rainbow of learning

As you prepare your green outfit and Irish touches for Saturday, enjoy making St. Patrick’s Day special with those around you. Happy planning!
