2012 Summer Reading: H-E-Buddy Reading Club

June 8, 2012 by Tracy

Photograph Credit: HEB.com

With the state of our economy, many retailers have scaled back their community relations.

Unfortunately, H-E-B grocery stores is limiting their summer reading club to Texas residents only.

My children participated in this program for 3 years. The prizes for reading 10 books included a tee-shirt, certificate, pencil, bookmark, and stickers.

Though we will be reading our books this summer, we will miss our free tee-shirts with Buddy the Bag on the front.

If you live in the state of Texas, then this reading program is worth your time.

Participation involves the following:

1. Print out the form,

2. Record the titles of the books read,

3. Confirm their reading with your initials, and

4. Mail the completed form to:

H•E•Buddy® 2012 Summer Reading Program

10530 Sentinel, San Antonio, TX 78217

Your form must be postmarked by October 1, 2012.

As you continue working on summer reading, enjoy the benefits of summer reading programs, like the H-E-Buddy Reading Club.

Since we have participated each year, I will send in our forms and see what happens. We are not Texas residents, but we have entered each year. I’ll let you know if we get rewarded. Happy reading!

Dunkin’ Donuts: National Doughnut Day – June 1, 2012

June 1, 2012 by Tracy

In addition to the free doughnuts offered by Krispy Kreme and LaMar’s, Dunkin’ Donuts is also celebrating National Donut Day.

Dunkin’ Donuts will give guests a free donut with a purchase of a Dunkin’ beverage.

If you get a craving for Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffee, then pair it with a free donut for a sweet celebration in honor of National Donut Day.

Enjoy your weekend. I think I’m going to have to get in an extra exercise session since I am starting the weekend on a sugar high. 🙂 Happy Doughnut Day!

Question: Which spelling do you prefer: donut or doughnut? (The spell checker does not like donut. I agree, but I’m partial to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Love the sweetness. Yum!)

LaMar’s Donuts: National Doughnut Day – June 1, 2012

More free doughnuts on National Donut Day. LaMar’s Donuts welcomes guests to choose a free gourmet donut with a hole with no purchase required.

If you are near a participating LaMar’s Donuts’ location, then stop in on June 1, 2012 between 5:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to choose your sweet treat.

The following history of National Donut Day is from LaMar’s Donuts’ web site:

THE HISTORY OF NATIONAL DONUT DAY

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June. In 1917, Salvation Army female volunteers known as “lassies” prepared thousands of donuts to the homesick soldiers that served in France during World War I.

The doughnuts were made by filling a pail with oil and using left over dough flour and other ingredients on hand and a wine bottle as a rolling pin. Doughnuts were fried – seven at a time – in steel helmets on an 18-inch stove. The 100 doughnuts made that first day were an immediate success.

Soon, hundreds of soldiers stood in muck outside the tent, waiting for the sweet taste of doughnuts. Before long, The Salvation Army was cooking thousands of doughnuts around the clock. National Donut Day was officially established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression.

As you continue using time wisely and investing in the lives of those around you, enjoy a little sweetness together to begin your weekend! Happy Doughnut Day!
