2012: Spring Break Activities

March 23, 2012 by Tracy

The time of constant hand washing, nose blowing, watery eyes, and bottles of Benadryl are upon us. Allergy season has sprung. With the cool temperatures and sunny days, my kids enjoy playing outsides, but we pay for it later with sleepless nights.

In keeping a balance between fun activities and not aggravating my family’s allergies, I enjoyed planning our spring break. Since our school’s calendar parallels a college schedule more than grade school schedules, we have an early spring break. During that week, our family had a blast without breaking the bank.

Monday: Dinner Party

To recover from our weekend, we remained home to finish laundry, tidy the house, and prepare for our evening visitors. My children spent the day playing, relaxing, and helping.

My son enjoyed writing the names of our dinner guests on the name cards while my daughter helped pick up the toys and match the newly laundered socks.

By the time our guests arrived, we had a clean home, the table set, and dinner ready. Our family enjoyed the special time spent with my son’s teacher and her husband. What a great start to our fun spring break.

Tuesday: Play Date

With a clean house, we invited our friends over to play. During this time, my children practiced sharing their toys and teaching their friends our family rules. All six kids played well together which ended with naps for my girls in the afternoon.

Wednesday: Bounce House Day

Back in September, I purchased two LivingSocial deals for a total of $18. The offer was a 4-visit punch card to a local bounce house for $9 each. As each admission is regularly $6 per child, I saved 63% by purchasing this deal. In fact, the deal was so good, I purchased two of them. Since our family had not visited this establishment, we went not knowing what to expect.

Wow! Impressive! Since most children were in school, we had the entire room to ourselves. I used our LivingSocial voucher and received two punch cards. After using three of the 8 punches on this visit, we get to return again.

My children enjoyed running, sliding, jumping, riding the toys, and bouncing the rubber balls really high. I enjoyed the enclosed space behind a solid door and carpeted floors. Though I would prefer better lighting, we had a great time and will return again for another fun visit.

Thursday: Another Bounce House Day

We visited our favorite bounce house next. I used a voucher purchased in October from LivingSocial for $7 which included admission for two. This deal was a 50% savings. Yeah! For our third admission, I used a free pass saved from our summer reading reward.

Though I would have liked to space out our bounce house trips, we worked around the plans of our friends and the events at the bounce houses. Our spring break occurred during St. Patrick’s Day week, so some of the bounce houses had special events on Thursday and Friday.

In choosing days that were less busy, we enjoyed having the bounce house to ourselves. Though a few families came and went during our stay, we mainly had the place to ourselves.

After a few hours of indoor play, we went outside to climb and swing on the new playground equipment. With others on the equipment, my children had playmates for part of their adventures. 😉

A little too sunny for pictures 🙂

Friday: Visiting Grandparents’ House

After a full week of fun, my children opted to forgo visiting a new indoor playground establishment. (I purchased a daily deal for admission which we will try at another time.)

Tired out, my children chose to have lunch with Daddy and relax at home. So, we packed our lunches, drove to Daddy’s office, and enjoyed an outdoor picnic before visiting some of his co-workers.

During the evening, Paul and I enjoyed a long-overdue date night (using a Groupon, of course 🙂 ) while our kids spent special time with Grandpa and Grandma, who love to spoil them.

Saturday: Planting our Garden

Our spring break came to a close with the start of our garden. Paul built the frame, and then we planted our herbs and vegetables. Stay tuned on Thursday’s food posts for updates and pictures of our garden’s bounty.

Though allergy season arrived early, we planned around the outdoor activities and enjoyed our spring break. Planning ahead, using vouchers from daily deal sites, and adjusting to your family’s needs will result in a fantastic spring break.  If need further inspiration for spring break activities, our family participated in these events last year.

In using time wisely, enjoy your spring break while taking a break from your regular routine. Happy planning!

Let St. Patrick’s Day celebrations begin!

Burger King is offering each guest a free value-size French fry on Saturday and Sunday, March 17 – 18, 2012.

This offer is while supplies last, and served with green ketchup. How fun!

I want the free fries just to try the green ketchup. What a fun twist to St. Patrick’s Day! 🙂

Per Burger King’s Facebook Wall:

  • You don’t need to wear green and you don’t have to be Irish to feel lucky this St. Paddy’s Day Weekend at BURGER KING® because we’re giving away FREE fries March 17th-18th!
  • NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.
  • While supplies last.
  • Restrictions apply.

Not sure what the restrictions are – no restrictions listed. But if you will be near a Burger King on Saturday or Sunday and want a snack, then stop by and ask for your free value-size fries. Enjoy!

Good Grades: Second Quarter Rewards – 2012

March 16, 2012 by Tracy

For the first quarter rewards, I expressed my concern with my son’s school transitioning from an official report card to on-line records.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Not knowing how Krispy Kreme would handle the change, we stopped by with our printout.

True to form, Krispy Kreme Doughnut employees accepted the printout, congratulated my son on his good grades, allowed him to choose his 6 doughnuts, and stamped his printout.

What a joy to watch my son carefully choose his rewards, remembering to choose special ones for his sisters. His sweetness melts my heart. 🙂

Blockbuster

Due to their merger, Blockbuster has removed the good grades promotion page from their website. At this time, Blockbuster is not offering a free movie for good grades. If this promotion returns or changes, I will pass along the information.

To find other good grade rewards, click on this comprehensive list. In using time wisely, I suggest you call your local businesses to verify participation before arriving. 🙂 Better to find out before you arrive that a store is not participating than having to explain the situation to your disappointed child.

If you find other programs, please share the information in the comments. Happy weekend!

Family Activities: Recreational District Events

March 9, 2012 by Tracy

Our recreational districts host some of the most creative activities for my children. In our area of South Carolina, we are fortunate enough to live near three recreational districts. Each offers sports teams, community events, and activities.

Soccer Season 2008

Sports Teams

When looking for a soccer program for our son, we found that our city’s league was over $70 per child. Did I mention my son was three at the time? As I picked my jaw off the floor, I decided to look elsewhere for a soccer program.

After a little research, I found a 6-week program through the recreational district in the next city over for $25 per child. Now, that’s my type of program.

Through this program, my son learned the skills of soccer, as there were no teams or games. For a three-year old, this format was fantastic. Our family enjoyed the one-hour practice time outdoors as our son learned the game, rules, and skills.

Having loved soccer, my son requested basketball and t-ball sessions. All three of the programs met our expectations. In fact, my son played these sports while he was 3-5 years old. We upgraded him to a soccer team when he turned 6, but the recreational district programs prepared him for the games.

Our recreational districts offer sporting events for children, teens, and adults. Teams are usually on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once the program fills, then remaining entrants have to wait for the next session.

Halloween 2010

Community Events

Our recreational districts offer free to inexpensive community events. From free Touch a Truck events, where construction and monster vehicles fill the park for participants to climb up and “drive,” to $5-$6 events for Leprechaun O’Gala (St. Patrick’s Day), Flashlight Easter Egg Hunts, Enchanted Tracks (Halloween), and Polar Express (Christmas) activities, our recreational districts give great opportunities for family fun.

Adult events include walks, runs, floating rubber ducks down a river, food tasting, and fairs (Scottish, Renaissance, etc.). These gatherings promote healthy living and community unity.

Inflatable Fun 2012

Activities

Besides the sports and events, some recreational districts offer on-going activities. Some of these activities are water parks, hiking trails, ice skating, inflatable zones, playground equipment, and train rides. For my family, spending time at the recreational district is a blast. My children look forward to visiting as often as possible since they enjoy the programs, events, and activities.

To find your recreational districts, do a search on your favorite search engine:

1. Go to www.SwagBucks.com (You are earning free Swag Bucks for rewards and prizes, aren’t you?)

2. Type “(YOUR CITY) recreational district.”

3. Type “(CITY NEAR YOU) recreational district.”

4. Type “(YOUR COUNTY) recreational district.”

Hopefully, you will find one or more recreational districts. When you do, look over their schedule to find sports teams, community events, and activities that your family will enjoy. While using time wisely, enjoy your family time. Happy planning!

Question: Do you take part in events with your recreational district?
