National Do Not Call Registry

National Do Not Call Registry

While cooking dinner on the stove, calling out spelling words to my second grader, and buckling the tiny plastic seat belt in Strawberry Shortcakes’ car, my telephone rings.

As I prevent dinner from burning, calm my son who is waiting for his next word, and hand the car to my toddler, I trip over the toys on the kitchen floor and reach the phone. Met with a recorded message informing me that I qualify for a credit card or a credit increase that I have not requested, I hang up.

Though those irritating phone call disruptions will never entirely go away, I have limited those disruptions by placing our telephone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry. Due to the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007, telephone numbers placed on the Do Not Call Registry remain on the list permanently.

Do Not Call Registry Defined

The Do Not Call Registry is a list of phone numbers refusing telephone solicitations. If you have an account with a company or one of its subsidiaries, you may have accepted their terms of agreement to contact you with offers, like my example above. You cannot stop all the extra phones calls, but you can stop lots of them.

Limits of Do Not Call Registry

You can register your home and cellular phone numbers.

Registration is free, and as of February 2008, your registration will not expire.

How to add your number to the Do Not Call Registry

1. Online

2. Phone by calling 1-888-382-1222

3. TTY by calling 1-866-290-4236

In using time wisely, add your phone numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry. As you cut the number of distractions, you might finish dinner on time without any burnt edges. 🙂 Happy distraction removal!

Question: How often do you get bothered with unsolicited phone calls?

Using Time Wisely: Counting my Blessings (90 – 102)

Counting my Blessings (78-89)

As I discover a new routine and work through new challenges, I choose to set aside my To Do list, pause, and count my blessings. This on-going series posting periodically is medicine for my soul.

While in the midst of changing diapers, laundry, school runs, and meals, I forget how far I’ve come. Taking a moment to reflect and count my blessings cheers me for I am truly blessed.

Not quite sure how is it that I forgot how tired I would be after the first day of school, but I was depleted of energy last night. Though dealing with the school supplies, the picture taking, and the gifts is busy, the emotional tug between wanting to keep my children home and releasing them to learn was exhausting. For me, the emotional tiredness is more difficult to overcome than the physical soreness.

After posting a beginning of the summer Counting My Blessings article and squeezing in another post a little past the halfway mark, I continue to count these end-of-summer blessings:

90. Fantastic pediatrician practice. Not to bore you with details, but we switched practices. Oh my, I should have made this change long ago. Our new office files the claims accurately and completely the first time which saves me money, energy, and time! What a huge blessing in addition to the wonderful services provided at my daughter’s well-child visit.

91. Clean bill of health. Realizing how fortunate I am to have three healthy children, I know families who travel from appointment to appointment day after day searching for relief for their children. As my daughter received her annual physical this summer, I am grateful for her clean bill of health.

92. Quick rescue from water park lifeguard. On one of our many visits to the water park, we arrived as everyone cleared the pools. A little guy had wandered back to the pool as his grandmother ordered lunch. The preschooler had removed his life jacket and ended up floating face-first in the water. The immediate rescue from the lifeguard resulted in the child breathing without needing resuscitation. It was a scary time, but filled with lots of teachable moments from water safety, rescue personnel, and medical equipment.

93. Water park passes. So thankful we purchased our annual passes through a daily deal site. We enjoyed our times at the water park and look forward to returning in May.

94. Summer reading prizes. Though the prize package through our local library this year changed from last year, we made the most out of our prizes. I was especially thankful for the baseball tickets that we put to good use.

95. Rook Night. When Paul and I were dating, we spent many evenings hanging out with our friends playing Rook (a card game). The game is full of strategy, and we jump at the chance to play as often as possible. For some summer fun, we hosted a Rook Night at our home and enjoyed playing until the wee hours of the morning.

96. Long family vacation. Holding off our vacation until my mom retired pushed our time away to the very end of summer. We have enjoyed having her with us for the month and will miss her when she leaves this weekend.

97. Family. My children got to meet and reunite with many of my relatives. I’m so thankful I got to spend time with my Great Aunt Bonnie, who passed away a week after we returned home. On our last visit with her, my Great Aunt showcased her beautiful birds. I am so thankful my Aunt Bonnie made the visit memorable because my children remember her.

98. Olympic Games. Loved watching the Olympics and hearing my children choose their favorites. My son looked for “USA” or uniforms in red, white, and blue. My older daughter wanted to know what language each player spoke. She wanted to root for anyone who spoke English and all the gymnasts. I loved watching Misty and Kerri win another gold in sand volleyball, Michael Phelps winning over and over and over again, and listening to the behind the scenes dedication of the athletes.

Funny Olympic Story: In watching the sand volleyball tournaments, I had seen two prior matches where the players wore warmer clothing due to the lower temperatures during the evening hours in London.

The first daytime match I watched, the USA was playing Brazil. The USA players were wearing long-sleeved shirts with bikini bottoms while the Brazilian players wore a long-sleeved white shirt with their bikini over it. Their top had BRA written across the top. I made the comment to Paul, “Did they (the Brazilian team) really need to indicate which item was the bra?” After snickering, Paul reminded me that BRA was short for Brazil. 😉

99. Annual membership. Investing in annual memberships for frequently-visited establishments stretches our dollars and provides hours of fun. Between our zoo, botanical gardens, science museum, and recreational district memberships, we save hundreds of dollars for all the visits we get from our passes, including the awesome reciprocal benefits.

100. Nap time. When the rains came down and we cut our visit short at the zoo, we returned to my mom’s house for lunch and a wonderful nap. That nap was more needed than I realized.

101. Cheap airline flight. Though Paul had the time to take, he really needed to get back to work. Since the kids and I stayed in Florida longer than a week, Paul flew back while we remained to play. In keeping an eye on flights, we snagged a $40 flight (taking no baggage) back for Paul. He carried his laptop bag for his personal item.

I drove back with the kids and my mom a week later. The inexpensive flight allowed our family to break up our trip on the way down. We stayed in a hotel with a hot tub and swimming pool. It was so nice relaxing after the long drive with the warm water melting away the tension in my shoulders. 🙂

102. Safe trip. Our van received a tune-up and continues to operate well. Our trip was smooth and without incident. I am so thankful for a reliable vehicle that makes traveling fun and comfortable. Blessed to drive a minivan.

With our summer activities coming to a close, I have so much gratitude for these gifts. In counting my blessings, my heart is encouraged, my problems seem small, and my face wears a smile.

Whatever situation you may find yourself, there is ALWAYS someone who would love to be in your shoes. In using time wisely, redirect your focus from what you don’t have to all that you have received while counting your blessings.

Question: For what are you thankful today?

Goals for August 2012: Cash-Only Challenge – Again

Goals for August

Photograph Credit: Flickr (Angie Torres)

Still enjoying our summer days, but it is quickly coming to an end next week. We arrived home over the weekend from a 2.5 week vacation. Well, the kids and I stayed that long. Paul came back after 1.5 weeks.

We enjoyed lots of attractions and family time, but it’s getting time to get back on a routine. From the looks of my goals, I need my routine back. Not all is lost. I am making some progress, and Rome wasn’t built in a day. 😉

If you are just joining me, I set these goals (listed in bold print) in January 2012. The financial goals are based on Crystal Paine’s The Money Saving Mom’s Budget. Each month, I post how I’m doing on these goals. Feel free to jump in and comment on your goals. It’s never too late to get moving.

The following is a recap of my progress from July, and my current goals for August 2012 (I know we are almost in September, so I better get busy. ;-)):

Physical

Drink 4 glasses of water per day.  Fell back on this one. Florida water is not as tasty as South Carolina H2O. Even with the filter, the water did not quench my thirst. I drank too many glasses of refreshing sweet tea. It has lots of water, but I need to get back on track for August.

Eat breakfast each morning. Excellent job! I did skip the greasy doughnuts served as the continental breakfast at our hotel, but I am on track with this goal.

Exercise for 20 minutes at least 3 times a week. No official exercise, but we stayed moving. Walking through the zoo (3 times), science museum, children’s museum (twice), the pier, and the botanical gardens wore me out. This goal has been tough. I think I will try to find a good exercise/healthy living blog to encourage me on this upward mountain. Can anyone recommend such a blog that is updated regularly?

Family

Plan at least one family outing/activity each week. Accomplished! Even without the family vacation, we have stayed busy with entertaining guests at home, shopping together, getting our home clean, and enjoying dinner with friends. Love this goal, and keeping it all year.

Spend 10 minutes with each child each day. Fell back on this one, especially on vacation. With all the preparations, I spent limited time with them one-on-one. Then on vacation, we played together. I guess some days I spent more than 10 minutes with one child, but not with each. In working through a new routine this fall, this time will get carefully scheduled.

Allow children to help with a household task each week. Definitely could not have gotten the house clean before we left without help. My kids are doing a great job helping out and taking ownership of their tasks. Using time wisely to show them how to clean has been time well spent.

Financial

Follow Crystal’s year-long plan to reach my goals. I’m still behind on this goal because I need to research some of the budget items. Being away from home and my files did not help. I hope to get this done though I am unmotivated to do so. I know I’ll be glad when it is in place, but I just need to do it. Keep me accountable because I need you there to get me to the finish line.

Purchase dressers for my daughters’ room. This goal is ongoing. We received princess decorations from a cousin who outgrew these items. Looks like next year (2013), Paul and I will design a princess room for our daughters. This is after our Noah’s Ark nursery gets transformed into a sports room for our son.

Purchase upgraded computers for hubby and me. This goal is also ongoing. Remember we purchased more memory in June for my laptop? Well, it worked. I am seeing better use of my time with faster processing. Thrilled with this upgrade and will continue to seek options for upgrading Paul’s machine and my desktop.

Business

Write posts one week in advance. Don’t fall over, but I’m ahead. I know it only took me 8 months, but I never would have gotten here had I not started. The goal now is to keep the momentum going (*insert happy dance here*). 🙂

Make one improvement to the blog this month. Accomplished! I upgraded my widgets (on the sidebar) and affiliate links. My project of upgrading and correcting older posts is still a work in progress.

Read two chapters of blog book each month. Read some, but not sure if I finished 2 chapters. My reading has slipped away. Though I enjoy reading one book at a time, I was encouraged to start more than one type of book. Then depending on my mood, pick the one I feel like reading. Not sure how I feel about reading multiple books at the same time.

Though I’ve been gone part of August, I am still making progress with my goals. This journey is full of choices, and some months I make more progress than others. When the going gets tough, I only need to glance back to see how far I’ve come. That motivation keeps me moving forward. Keep striving for your goals!

Question: What are your reading habits? One book or multiple books going at the same time?

Scheduling Time to Catch Up on Pending E-mail Items

August 8, 2012 by Tracy

Scheduling time to catch up on pending email items

Scheduling time to catch up on pending email itemsHow are your e-mail accounts holding up? For about a month, I have had about 10 e-mails in a pending status just because I needed a block of time to address the matters thoroughly.

Since I typically check e-mail 2 to 3 times a day, I kept these messages in my inbox. Seeing them everyday kept reminding me to address them, but time did not appear. Imagine that!

Though I still have my personal account that needs attention, I scheduled time while watching the Olympics to work through the pending e-mails in my Using Time Wisely e-mail account. Wow, I cannot remember the last time that inbox was empty. It was great downloading free e-books, updating affiliate links, and archiving reference material.

With so many e-mails coming through my accounts, keeping all my inboxes uncluttered frees up my time. Working on clearing out my business account inbox has motivated me to schedule my personal account tomorrow. Thankfully, the other 8 accounts have no pending items. Yeah!

For more on how I keep a clutter-free inbox, checkout step 1, step 2, step 3, and step 4 of my system. What works for me may not work for you. However, I hope by sharing my tips that you can receive order and organization in your busy lifestyle while using time wisely. Happy organizing!

Question: How many pending items remain in your inbox?
