2013: Garden Journal – May Edition

May 15, 2013 by Tracy

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

https://www.usingtimewisely.com/2012-garden-journal-october-edition/Warm weather arrived in mid-April, so we celebrated by planting our garden.

Thrilled with the results of our 2012 garden, we learned that lettuce does not like hot weather, so we didn’t plant any this year. We also learned that more plants can fit in our 1-foot square sections, so we bought more plants this year.

Also, I will clear out the garden at the end of this season because left alone, it becomes a huge mess.

Before we dive into all the details of our new garden plot, I will share how we began the process.

Though a bit embarrassing as we did not touch the garden since the end of last summer, I will share the tangled, weed-filled disaster with which we started.  Though it starts out ugly, this garden journal ends with a beautiful result. (If you follow me on Facebook, then you got a sneak peek. 🙂 )

2013: Garden Journal - May EditionPreparing our Garden

Armed with my gloves, a spade, a rake, scissors, buckets, and a trash bag, I braced myself for the task at hand.

The mini tree on the bottom left corner is our parsley that overfilled its square and visited with the strawberries to its right and the dead basil behind it.

As I pruned the existing plants, I was surprised to see how well the parsley was doing when I found 4 happy slugs under the leaves.

The strawberry plants continue to thrive, and the oregano is also growing well. The rest of the green items were weeds, so I began digging and pulling up stems, roots, and weeds from each quadrant.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

I also removed the top layer of soil and dug around looking for slugs to remove from the garden. Though I found no more (thank goodness), we did find worms.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

After getting all the weeds out, I removed the strawberries and the oregano into buckets of top soil to replant. Leaving the garden bed empty to recover.

Planning our Garden

Making a few changes from last year, I mapped out the 16 slots on a sheet of paper and began making a list of plants to grow. I kept to the basics with a couple herbs and the rest fruits and vegetables.

When we went to Home Depot, I purchased the items on the list and added in a few extras for the remaining 2-4 squares. I increased the number of plants in each square to multiply our harvest.

Purchasing supplies for our Garden

Our family went to Home Depot for our garden trip. Spending $160, we purchased our plants, slug killer, top soil, Miracle Grow soil, stakes, and trellises.

BONUS: By spending $100 at Home Depot, we submitted a promotional rebate and will receive 2 free tickets to an Atlanta Braves baseball game. With my husband passing on his love of Braves baseball to our son, they will enjoy a game this summer.

While shopping, I met a wonderful gardener, who works at Home Depot, named Jennifer. She answered my questions and made some suggestions regarding which plants to put together or beside each other. I am very grateful for her and will return to her when I need further help.

Providing support for our Garden

With the supplies purchased, Paul added the soil to our garden bed. (See his well-worn Braves cap. ;-))

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

He also added the trellises for the climbing plants and stakes on the corners to hold up the bird netting.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

With the bed finished, Paul created the side beds for our blueberries and blackberry shrubs. Now, it was my turn to begin planting.

Planting our Garden

With the bed prepared, I began transplanting our oregano from last year in one square, and in another square, I transplanted all 5 strawberry plants from last year. We are going to have lots of strawberries this year.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

I then began in the back row, and followed my plan. I dug a little hole, and planted the plant from the containers. I then moved to the next one. When I finished the back row, I moved up to the next row, and continued until I finished planting the bed.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

Then Paul helped me by digging the holes for the blueberry and blackberry shrubs. My girls are really excited about these plants. Our youngest daughter enjoyed holding the shovel between plantings.

2013: Garden Journal - May Edition

After all the planting, I gave the garden a good watering and applied the slug killer. With the garden cared for, I covered the bed with the bird net to keep the rabbits and birds away from our tender plants. Having lost multiple strawberries last year and catching one thief in the net, I have learned the value of protecting our investment.

Plucking harvest from our Garden

Thus far, we have retrieved 6 strawberries from our mini-patch in the center of our garden. Yum! The buds have lots more coming. The rest of the plants are still establishing root before taking off.

Planting a garden sure is hard work. We make our garden a family project and enjoy watching and eating the harvest. Though I will share our garden journey with you, we are still novices and will make mistakes along the way.

If you are planting any type of garden, then I would love to learn from you. In using time wisely, I will not hesitate to ask my neighbor or Jennifer, at Home Depot, any question. No matter how basic my request, they willingly help me without making me feel like a novice. By asking these seasoned gardeners, we save money, energy, and time. Wishing you success with your plantings!

Question: Did you or are you planting a garden this year?

Using Time Wisely: Counting my Blessings (119 – 140)

Counting my Blessings

With the experiments of the monthly posts in January and April, I have been remiss in adding to the counting my blessings posts. Keeping a spirit of thankfulness overrides the difficulties of life.

The struggles will come, and some I cannot control. However, I can control my reactions, responses, and attitude in the midst of those trials.

Choosing gratitude is not always easy nor my first response.

However, God only wants what is best for us and allows us to go through the difficulties to strengthen our dependence on Him.

Having previously counted 118 blessings, I continue counting with these blessings:

119. One snow day this winter where my children enjoyed sledding and building snowmen.

120. Memberships that provide lots of family fun throughout the year.

121. Friends that enjoy playing card and board games until past our bedtime.

122. My Heavenly Father, who provides me with daily instructions and focus from His Word.

123. Girlfriends, who provide an understanding shoulder and encouragement along the way.

124. A listening mentor, who provides experience on this road of motherhood.

125. Supporting husband, ready to hold me while I talk it out.

126. Understanding mother, who has walked this path alone and sees that I am well-protected.

127. Giggling girls curled up in my oldest daughter’s bed hiding from their brother, who apparently does not play their game.

128. My son, who goes to soccer practice even when he would rather quit and stay home.

129. Partnering with my son’s teacher to challenge without frustrating him.

130. An expert teacher’s help to create a summer plan of attack to prepare my daughter for first grade in the fall.

131. Random hugs from my children.

132. Coupons to save our family money at the grocery store.

133. Patient readers who understand when life gets in the way of blog posts and updates.

134. Bluehost personnel re-installing my blog from a backup when a file corrupted.

135. Dependable Internet service providing the means to publish posts.

136. Meeting Crystal Paine, the owner of Money Saving Mom, at a home school convention.

137. Medical equipment confirming a sprain to my knee.

138. Quick healing from my knee sprain.

139. The time our children spend with their grandparents.

140. Fantastic mom, grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, mentor, and friends, who I love, respect, and honor on Mother’s Day.

Stopping to count my blessings takes my focus off immediate problems. In the scope of eternity, my little problems will fade away. Keeping my eyes on my Creator, I look beyond myself and depend on Him.

No matter your circumstances, you can count your blessings. This exercise will remind you of the good in your life rather than dwelling on the troubles flooding your mind. May you see the good all around you as you count your blessings. Happy counting!

Question: For what are you thankful?

Getting Back to My Normal

Getting back to my normal

Happy May Day! My April has been a whirlwind of activity. Though I have knocked out many items on my To Do list, I still have much to do as I am getting back to my normal.

As I made progress last month, I truly learned to give myself grace. When my allergies overcame me, I took the time to concentrate on getting rest which drew me away from the blog. I know my posting in April was all-over-the-place, but all the April posts have been written and published.

Also, I think everything is back to normal from the corrupt file that took down the site for about 1 hour a few days ago. Life is never dull as you can tell.

In an effort to give you a peek into my daily life, I am highlighting a bright spot in my day with a post and a picture on Using Time Wisely’s Facebook Page. If you are not a fan of Using Time Wisely, then come like our page and join in the chatter. I’ll meet you over there. 😉

Keep using time wisely. Schedules and responsibilities are different, and we won’t always make the best decisions. However, we continue to progress and learn along the way. Thanks for joining me on this journey to using time wisely. I’m blessed to have each of you blessing my life. Happy Hump Day!

Question: Do you celebrate May Day?

Facebook: Birthday Wishes via Notification E-mail and Event Tab

Birthday freebies and discounts - Day 30
Facebook: Birthday wishes

Photograph Credit: Microsoft Images

I have a love-hate relationship with social media. Seeing the value of the medium, I have accounts for Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. However, I have only dabbled with Facebook and am totally clueless as to Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Realizing how much of my time gets zapped when I just pop on to check Facebook, I choose to post my physical goal updates on Using Time Wisely while ignoring most of my personal contacts. Though I understand the need to connect to others, I choose to connect by sending birthday wishes.

In limiting my time on Facebook – because I have more important tasks to accomplish, I choose to have a birthday notification sent to be via e-mail, and I use the event tab to send all my birthday wishes while using time wisely.

Receiving Birthday Wishes via Notification E-mail

On Sunday afternoons, I receive an e-mail from Facebook listing all my friends celebrating a birthday in the next two weeks. I receive this notification by requesting it from Facebook:

    • Sign into your Facebook account.
    • Click on the gear button in the top right-hand corner.
    • Choose Account Settings.
    • Select Notifications on the left-hand sidebar.
    • Under How You Get Notifications, click the Edit button next to Email option.
    • Select All Notifications, Except the Ones You Unsubscribe From.
    • Choose Close.
    • Watch your email.

As you get notifications via email that you do not want, choose the Unsubscribe button at the bottom of the email. As you weed out the notifications, you will keep the ones you need. If you later choose to reactivate a notification, you can go through the same steps above and choose the Turn On option for any unsubscribe notification you want.

Tip: If you use Google Calendar, How-to Geek provides step-by-step instructions for exporting the birthday information into your calendar. Though using Google Calendar did not work for me, you might find it helpful.

To create a Google Calendar, you will need a Google account (i.e., Gmail, reader, etc.). If you don’t have such an account – no worries, you can sign up for free.

Sending Birthday Wishes via the Event Tab

Whether or not you prefer the e-mail notification as a reminder, there’s a simple way to post birthday wishes without accessing each friend’s wall. In using time wisely, I send birthday wishes via the event tab.

    • Sign into your Facebook account.
    • Click on the Home button in the top right-hand corner.
    • Under Favorites, select Events on the left-hand sidebar.
    • On your Events page, choose the List option (located next to the word EVENTS).
    • Viewing a thumbnail picture of each friend’s profile, you can “write a birthday wish on her timeline” in the box provided.

By sending birthday wishes via the event tab, I spend less than 5 minutes connecting with friends without accessing each timeline. In using time wisely, I find the event tab helpful to keep my Facebook time to a minimum while connecting with my friends.

New Series in April

Speaking of connecting, I asked for your feedback regarding my experiment in January – choosing one theme for the month. I heard back that the theme progressing day after day made reading easier as one did not need to review the previous week’s post.

Desiring to help you in using your time wisely, I am considering some blog posting changes. I’m not sure exactly what I will do, but I hear your feedback. Since the January theme received favorable support, I will return to the one theme option for April focusing on birthday freebies and discounts.

Birthday parties and celebrations are fast approaching in our home. As we enjoy the generosity of businesses, I will highlight one birthday club or offer each day. If you use these birthday coupons or discounts, please share your experiences in the comments. I look forward to celebrating birthday wishes with you. Happy end-of-March!

2013: Happy First Day of Spring!

Over the weekend, we received a taste of spring. The sun was out, the temperatures were in the low 70’s, and the birds were a-fluttering.

Opening the windows for a few hours was refreshing as I began my spring cleaning, and my children enjoyed spending time at the park with Daddy. 😀

Though the weather pattern has changed to much colder temperatures this week, spring is here and more beautiful days are coming.

In celebrating spring’s arrival, a few businesses are offering these free or discounted options:

  • Rita’s – Free Italian Ice – March 20, 2013
  • Fazoli’s – Free kid’s meal with purchase of adult entree – March 21, 2013
  • 7-Eleven – Any size coffee for $1 on Wednesdays in March – March 20 and 27, 2013

Whether or not you participate in these promotions, spring is here. On our family’s spring calendar, we will plant our garden, celebrate birthdays, and enjoy getting outside to play and explore. For those of you still in the deep freeze, hang in there. Spring is on its way. 🙂

Happy first day of spring!
