Stretching your Dollars: Creating Special Gifts

December 17, 2011 by Tracy

Only 8 more shopping days until Christmas! Are you still searching for ideas for someone on your list? In using time wisely and stretching your dollars, you might consider making a gift. If you are saying, “I’m not crafty.”

I get it.

However, all the creativity is done. All you need is your printer with ink, scissors, a few supplies, and your time. Really, you can make these gifts. Enlist some help if you need the extra encouragement. 🙂

Edible Gifts

Download a free e-book for Gifts in a Jar. These options are great for making gifts for groups of individuals. One year, I made cookie mixes for each of my family members. By adding the ingredients in the order supplied, these simple-to-construct gifts were warmly received.

Make one or all four of these snacks in a jar. Mix up a huge batch of your favorite snack and add them to jars, place a tag on it, and ready to give.

Sparkling Gift

Glittering Candles made with Epsom salt. These festive candles would make great gifts for anyone on your list. You can choose masculine or feminine colors depending on your receiver.

Scrapbooker’s Gift

Download 12 months of digital scrapbook pages. Though I have not scrapbooked this year, I do love it, and getting a gift with the pages already designed would be fantastic.

With this download, you can either burn a disc to present or have the 12 pages printed onto cardstock and place them in a nice scrapbook. Either way, your scrapbook enthusiast will have a year-in-review album available for all those pictures.

Family Conversation Gift

Download this free family dinner conversation starter kit. With your printer, a pair of scissors, and a jar, you can give this creative gift to families with children. This gift would be great throughout the year as well as at Christmas.

These gift ideas are special in that using time wisely you will create a present especially for your recipient. The personalized gift does not need a huge price tag. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

I love to receive personalized gifts since the sender exerts thought, effort, and sacrifice for me. May you continue finding creative ways to stretching your dollars while gifting to your family and friends.

Question: Did you gift 40 individuals a $10 eGift card today? The Feed It Forward program continues until Christmas Day. Keep on giving!

Ready to spread some Christmas cheer? This is so exciting!

Getting Started

1. Click on this Feed it Forward link

2. Select the red “START GIVING FREE GIFTS” button

3. Sign in with your Feed it Forward account, Restaurant.com account (which you already have, right?), create a new account, or log in through Facebook

NOTE: Since I signed up with Restaurant.com using my junk e-mail account, the eGift cards are sent with that e-mail address. I have already received responses from concerned friends since they did not recognize the e-mail address. After my explanation, they understand. But if you use your junk e-mail account to register with Restaurant.com, be ready for some skeptical feedback from your recipients.

Sending the Gifts

1. Select your friends either through your e-mail account, Facebook, or enter their e-mail addresses manually

2. Choose your gift card design, greeting, and personal message

3. Confirm and your e-Gift will be on its way

Enjoy sending surprises to your family and friends each day through Christmas Day (while supplies last). Besides the joy of giving, enjoy stretching your dollars by gifting while staying within your Christmas budget. Going through the process the first day will take the most time. Once your account is setup, you will be able to breeze through while using time wisely. Keep stretching your dollars and Merry Christmas!

Question: To whom are you gifting these eGift cards? I sent them to my family and then friends, who are struggling financially this Christmas season. Tomorrow, I get to gift 40 more. What a blessing!

Reimbursement for Pot Hole Damage – Part 2 of 2

December 3, 2011 by Tracy

Last week, I began the story of my pot hole reimbursement journey and left off with the denial from the county, due to the incident occurring outside their jurisdiction. Though my county claim was denied, I received the contact information for the State.

State Risk Management Contact

Choosing to proceed with the State, I contacted the SC DOT office for the filing instructions. This process was more detailed than the county submission. To file with the State, I needed to submit the following documents:

1. Notarized Claim Form. I downloaded the claim form, filled it out, and then contacted my State Farm insurance agent about notary services. With verification that they offer free notary services (yeah!), I selected a day to visit. When I arrived at their office a  day or two later (while on that side of town), my State Farm agent’s assistant notarized the claim form, and I was on my way.

2. Copy of vehicle registration. To retrieve these documents, I went to file box 1, found the 10th file slot which houses our vehicle documentation, and located the copy of our vehicle registration. I then made a copy from my printer, and filed the paperwork back in the file box.

3. Copy of driver’s license. With my important document file box 1 out, I also located a copy of my driver’s license from the fourth file opening housing our personal documents. After choosing one of the copies, I put the accordion file back on the shelf.

4. Pictures. Thankfully, I had taken pictures of the damage before getting the repairs made. After going back to the site to take pictures of the area, I downloaded all the pictures to my computer. Using a word processing program (Microsoft Word), I placed the pictures on one sheet using the copy and paste feature. After titling the document with my name and address for identification, I printed the page of pictures.

5. Copy of receipts. I made copies of the receipts for the tire ($16.84), the wheel ($125), and the alignment ($45.74).

With all the documents packaged gathered, I wrote a letter to accompany all the documents and requesting an $187.58 reimbursement. I then mailed all the information to the State on June 7, stapled my copies, and waited. In the middle of November, I was pleasantly surprised to open correspondence from the State finding enclosed a check for $187.58.

Though the whole reimbursement process required about 2 hours of time, I was able to stretch our dollars by submitting the reimbursement paperwork. Was the time spent researching and compiling the documents worth it? For me, using time wisely to gain $187.58 was worth it!

Though I had no guarantee that the State would process my claim, I still followed through and was thrilled with the results. Without any knowledge that reimbursement was possible, I was thankful I chose to call my mom and bring her up to speed on our life events. Speaking of mom, I think it’s time to make another call. 🙂

Question: Does your insurance company offer free notary services? Would love to hear of other insurance companies that offer this benefit. Of course, other comments are greatly appreciated as well. 🙂

Reimbursement for Pot Hole Damage – Part 1 of 2

November 26, 2011 by Tracy

When I hit that pot hole back in May, I had no idea I could get reimbursement from the State for the repairs. When the incident occurred, I focused on the task at hand – repairing my vehicle. While working through the process, which took about 3 weeks to complete, I mentioned the incident to my mom. This conversation saved me $187.58!

Having worked for her local county for almost 20 years, my mom asked if I had contacted the Risk Management department for a claim form. Having never heard of the risk management group, I inquired. Mom explained that each county has a risk management department to handle claims from pot holes, branches, etc. that damage property. After gathering the information and chatting with my mom, I looked up our county’s risk management office.

County Risk Management Contact

Not only was there a phone number listed, but also the employee’s name and e-mail address. I sent an e-mail requesting a claim form and was rewarded with instructions and the form by that afternoon. After filling out the information, I scanned in the document and e-mailed it back. The next week, I received communication that the road on which the incident occur is operated by South Carolina DOT (Department of Transportation). A contact person and phone number were provided.

At this point, I could have cut my losses and decided that this reimbursement process is taking too long to resolve. Knowing there was still a possibility that I could get reimbursed for these damages, I chose to continue searching and filing for reimbursement. Next week, I will share the end of the story. You will want to come back. It has a happy ending.  🙂

Question: Have you ever submitted a claim for reimbursement from your county? If so, please share the results in the comments.

On-Line Shopping: Rebates – Part 5 of 5

November 19, 2011 by Tracy

Photograph Credit: Flickr (ideas4Christmas2010)

The idea for this series began after the purchase of my husband’s waffle iron. After sharing how I stacked my savings and learned a new technique along the way, I hope you can increase your savings while stretching your dollars through on-line shopping.

If you have missed any of the money saving strategies in this series, you can catch up here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. In this last post of this series, I will be stacking my savings from the purchase of the waffle iron by submitting a rebate.

#5: Submit a Rebate

Some manufacturers offer rebates for items purchase through a single retailer. Around Thanksgiving, you will find a number of rebates offered on sale items on Black Friday. Before Paul and I had children, we used to camp out at Best Buy early on Friday morning waiting to gather our savings when the doors opened. Our waiting paid off since we would gain hundreds of dollars of merchandise at a huge discount after the rebates.

The waffle iron I purchased for Paul had a $10 rebate offer attached which added to our savings. We started the deal with a retail price of $59.99 which was on sale for $29.99. Then we added in the FREE SHIP TO STORE option and a $10 off promotional code which brought the cost down to $19.99. With tax, I paid $21.19. After receiving the merchandise, I submitted the $10 rebate which will be processed within the next 6-8 weeks.

To review, I paid $21.19, but will get back a check for $10 and a credit of $1.79 in my Shopathome.com account for a future disbursement. If I wanted to subtract these future savings from this order, then I got the $60 waffle iron for $9.40 by stacking my savings.

Yes, working through these five steps takes some time. But when I see these types of savings, I know I am using time wisely. Whether you use one or more strategies when shopping on-line, you can stack your savings while stretching your dollars. Keep your eyes peeled for some great deals and use your money-saving strategies to snag some inexpensive gifts on Black Friday, this upcoming Christmas season, and throughout the year. Happy savings!

Question: How often do you submit rebates for items with rebates? Curious to see your answer.
