Stretching My Daughter’s Birthday Money

March 9, 2013 by Tracy

Showing My Daughter How to Stretch her Birthday Money
Stretching My Daughter's Birthday Money

My youngest daughter received a Leapster Explorer for Christmas. This gaming console was purchased through Amazon at a great sale price.

Though the unit, charging station, and case were discounted, the game cartridges remained around $25 each. Ouch!

Asking friends, whose children have the Leapster Explorer, where they find their games, I quickly discovered that sales are rare on these items.

Knowing that the purchase of games was in our future, I registered her Leapster device and checked the box to receive e-mail notification of sales and discount items. (Of course, I used my junk e-mail account to prevent overloading my personal e-mail account with offers.)

Waiting for a Sale

Last week as I checked my junk e-mail account, I discovered that for a limited time all the Leapster Explorer game cartridges were 25% off with free shipping. This deal came at the perfect time as my daughter recently turned 3 and had saved her money for games.

Acting on the Sale

In using time wisely and stretching our dollars, my daughter and I made the following purchase:

    1. Logged into my Ebates account.
    2. Searched for the Leapfrog company which carries a 3% cash back on my purchase.
    3. Shopped through Ebates.
    4. Selected two game cartridges and added them to my shopping cart.
    5. Entered promotional code DISCOVER (which has now expired) to receive 25% off and free shipping on my order.
    6. Reviewed the order for errors.
    7. Placed the order using my credit card for which I will earn rewards.

Instead of paying $55 for the two games, we paid a total of $39.73 and will receive $1.19 back through Ebates and $.40 in credit card rewards. Spending less than $20 per game – rather than $25 plus shipping – helped in stretching my daughter’s birthday money. She did not mind waiting for a sale as she knew she could get 2 games rather than 1 if she was patient.

Teaching my children the value of money by showing them how we use the available savings tools to stretch our dollars, I enjoy watching them think through how they can save their money but also get the item they desire. Great lessons learned by waiting for a sale to come along. Happy waiting!

Question: For what have you waited to snag a great deal?

NEW! Walgreens Balance Rewards

September 8, 2012 by Tracy

Working the savings strategies at the drugstores help my family in stretching our dollars. In addition to their monthly store coupon booklet, in-ad store coupons, rebate program, and Register Rewards, Walgreens is rolling out a new program called Balance Rewards.

What are Balance Rewards?

In a nutshell, it is a loyalty program. You register for free, receive a card, scan the card at checkout, and earn points for qualified purchases.

What are the Rewards?

Per the terms and conditions of the Balance Rewards registration, you can redeem points for the following rewards:

Earned Points are converted into Redemption Dollars in five (5) tiers:

(1) 5,000 points = $5

(2) 10,000 points = $10

(3) 18,000 points = $20

(4) 30,000 points = $35

(5) 40,000 points = $50

At the time of transaction, you can choose to keep earning points or redeem the points on your card. This system reminds me of the Shop your Way Rewards with Sears, Kmart, MyGofer, and Land’s End.

How Do I Earn Rewards?

Will My Rewards Expire?

Yes, your points have expiration dates! You will need to make a purchase at least once every 6 months to keep your account active. You can continue to build your point balance, but will need to redeem them within 36 months of earning the rewards. For more specifics, you can read the terms and conditions.

Walgreens Balance Rewards Sweepstakes

To kickoff their new Balance Rewards program, Walgreens will give away 1 million Balance Reward points. The prizes are $1,000 in points to 10 Balance Reward members, who register on-line by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012.

Do not delay. Signup on-line for free, get your card via the mail, and wait for verification if you are one of the lucky 10 winners.

In stretching your dollars, signup and get ready to earn points with the new Walgreens Balance Reward program. If you win points from the sweepstakes, you will save lots of money.

In using time wisely, take a few moments to register for your Walgreens Balance Reward card. If you win, please come back and leave a comment. Hoping one or more of my readers win. Happy savings!

Staples: Rewards and Easy Rebates – Part 2 of 2

March 3, 2012 by Tracy

Great deals are found at office supply stores like Staples. Knowing the rules of the promotions can result in free paper, labels, pens, and other office supplies.

All the items in the post picture were free. Yes, free using Staples rewards and easy rebates. Last week, I shared the rules for Staples Rewards in Part 1 of this series. Today, I will cover easy rebates and share how to stack these promotions to get free merchandise.

Easy Rebates

The Staples Easy Rebate program does not require the loyalty card. These promotions allow you to buy the item and then send the information, either electronically or via mail, to receive your PayPal deposit or check. Indicated by easy rebate, these offers are in the weekly sales flyer and need a little of your time. But you will get your reward in cash.

Finding Rebate Items. Less frequent than Staples Rewards, the easy rebate items come around holiday events. During holiday seasons, watch for easy rebate offers.

Checking the limit. When you find items you need, check the limit. Some items have a limit of 1 while others allow 2 or more. If you buy more than the limit, you will not receive the rebate on the exceeded items.

Purchasing the items. The sales flyer will show the price of the items, i.e., copy paper for $1 – purchase price $5.99 with a $4.99 easy rebate. When you purchase this copy paper, the item will ring up at $5.99 at the time of sale. After payment, you will receive the rebate receipt.

Submitting your rebate. At the end of your sale, you will receive the rebate submission forms with your rebate receipts. Staples offers an easy rebate system on-line or via the mail. I use the on-line submission form without experiencing any delays, denials, or complications.

Receiving payment. Upon receiving the rebate, Staples sends a confirmation e-mail. After the rebate processes, I get another e-mail before receiving my check via mail. The entire process takes between 4-6 weeks after Staples receives the rebate submission.

Stacking Staples Promotions

When combining savings strategies, you can get deep savings. In this case, I used the Staples Rewards with Easy Rebates to score free copy paper, labels, pens, and markers. For the pictured transaction, I purchased:

2 – Kleenex facial tissues – 2 pack at $2.99 each (limit 2)

2 – Staples copy paper – $5.49 each (limit 2)

1 – Avery 8160 white address labels – $11.99 each (limit 1)

1 – Staedtler ballpoint pens – $5.99 each (limit 1)

1 – dry-erase markers – $1

After scanning the items, I could have used manufacturer’s coupons.

TIP: If you use manufacturer’s coupons, you will lower your out-of-pocket cost. If you then submit an easy rebate, you will receive the full rebate amount. The rebate will not deduct the amount of the coupon. So, use your coupons with your Staples Rewards and easy rebates.

I had no coupons, so my total came to $35.94. With the Staples Rewards I earned last quarter, I paid $36 in Staples Rewards. I handed the cashier my two vouchers, and I still had $.06 remaining on my rewards. After processing the payment, I received at the bottom of my receipt a coupon for $.06 – my remaining Staples Rewards with the same expiration date – March 31, 2012.

Upon returning home, I entered my receipt information into the Staples easy rebates on-line form for the following:

2 – Kleenex facial tissues for $2.99 each

2 – Staples copy paper for $5.49 each

1 – Avery 8160 white address labels for $11.99

1 – Staedtler ballpoint pens for $5.99

In about 4-6 weeks, I will receive checks totaling $34.94 making all the merchandise free after rewards and then better than free after rebates.

Though Staples offers other rewards, like ink cartridges (explained by Jenny Martin), I choose to concentrate on Staples Rewards and Easy Rebates. As you learn the rules to the office supply stores, you, too, will see deep discounts while replenishing your supplies. Using Staples Rewards and Easy Rebates will help in stretching your dollars while using time wisely. Happy savings!
